Duane Bridge
Cascade's Hero

What do we say about a hero? They don't need to be told that they are heroes. They don't need to be acknowledged, because a hero is a hero for the very reason that they are selfless and full of heart. We thank heroes perhaps to let ourselves know that they are amidst us in this world. Heroes know that they are good people and they have no need to questions themselves or their moralities. They are what we love and some day aspire to be. Duane Bridge has accomplished a lot in life, and is receiving the fourth annual Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) HEROES Award for the State of Oregon for his work with the Mighty Might ski racing program at Mt. Hood. Duane is currently the chairman of the Board of Trustees for Cascade Ski Club. Our sincere thanks go out to him for his long term commitment to the club, for working with the club's jump hill, for his visions of the future goals for the club, and ensuring that the club will be open to families, youth, and all people who have an affinity to the mountain.

An Eagle Scout by the age of 15 years old.

So how do we acknowledge Duane Bridge? What do we say about you Duane? You were an Eagle Scout by the age of 15 years old. That is a feat in itself. Maybe you were predestined to be such a man. Do we thank your family for encouraging your integrity and goodwill? But in the same place of justice you made yourself, and your own decisions about life and what to do.

A Champion ski Racer at 18 years of age whose records have yet to be broken by someone. Perhaps your name will live through the mountain that you grew up on. Do you think about these things? Do we ask you, or maybe you already know that you are part of the great mountain that we see while driving on a clear day through Oregon's biggest city. You are a piece of this mountain that reigns over the state like a gentle king. You perhaps are a knight, Duane. A Champion ski Racer at 18 years of age whose records have yet to be broken
Thank you for being what you are. We see you as someone who has been chosen for something beyond USA today for an interview. We see you as someone who gave of himself because that is what he does without question. You have given the freedom of the mountain to other children in the coaching arena of the alpine circuit. Perhaps this will bring out other heroic figures such as yourself. When you read this Duane, don't feel humble, don't feel embarrassed. Don't feel strange. Just know that you were chosen because we all feel this way. Take that into your heart as a man, and a hero, and a part of Oregon forever. Thank you for being what you are.
